An educational center was part of the original vision for The Highground. The center would educate its visitors about the cost of war, “the human cost”. With the Park’s neighbors deciding to sell, The Highground’s need to expand to accommodate more visitors as well as unexpected grants becoming available, the learning center became a reality.
Today, The Highground Museum encompasses a library filled with over 4,000 books covering a wide range of military history. Its garage is a place for our volunteers to get their lunches during work weeks, and the area that includes the gallery, a media room and a meeting room holds many of the different exhibits. The museum coordinator is responsible for the daily operations, donations including artifacts and library materials and setup and removal of each exhibit. The coordinator also researches, evaluates and books all incoming exhibits.
We are always looking for more displays! Please reach out to us if you have something you are willing to share or something specific you would like to see in the museum.

The creation and compilation of educational videos about The Highground, areas of historical military significance and other mission-relevant topics began in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The annual “Highground Education Days” event was an in-person gathering of over 2,000 students from 15 schools that visited The Highground to take part in four full days of educational programming. The state mandate regarding large gatherings made it necessary for The Highground to cancel the in-person event. However, the importance of the event is such that Highground staff and the many presenters decided to go forward with creating and offering the many presentations as videos for students, families and the general public.
This is the first ever “virtual” video event attempted by the Highground and to say there has been a steep learning curve is an understatement! Through the generous donation of funds to gather the necessary equipment and “learning as we go” on how to create and present these videos, we are able to start compiling what we hope will become an interesting and valuable video archive. We will continue to fine-tune our videos and we hope that you come back often to view our ever-growing collection.
Thank you to all the brave interviewees, presenters, and donors! In special recognition for kick-starting this program is a donation from the family of Marliss J Collinson. It is through their generosity in her honor that we were able to begin upon this new chapter in our mission.
